Exit Permit Only (EPO) & Exit Re-entry Permit (ERP) – Who Is It For and What Are the Benefits?
For individuals holding a Temporary Stay Permit (KITAS) in Indonesia, an Exit Permit Only (EPO) is required if you plan to leave the country, change jobs, or switch your KITAS type. Without this permit, or if your KITAS expires without obtaining an EPO, you’ll need to apply for an Exit Re-entry Permit (ERP) to re-enter Indonesia.
When Do You Need to Apply for an EPO?
There are 3 primary occasions when you need to apply for an EPO:
Leaving Indonesia with no intention of returning: If you plan to leave Indonesia permanently, you need an EPO to formally cancel your KITAS.
Changing employers: If you switch jobs and need to change your KITAS type (for example, from a work KITAS to a retirement KITAS), you must apply for an EPO.
Changing the type of KITAS: If you want to switch your current KITAS for a different type (e.g., changing from a working KITAS to a retirement KITAS), the EPO is required.
What Happens if You Leave Without an EPO?
If you leave Indonesia without completing the EPO procedure and later try to return, immigration authorities may raise questions or even deny your re-entry. This is because you haven’t followed the official process for canceling your KITAS, which could result in complications when you attempt to re-enter.
How to Apply for an EPO
The process to apply for an EPO is straightforward but requires submitting certain documents to the immigration office. The application generally takes about 3-5 working days to process. Once the EPO is stamped in your passport, you are required to leave the country within 5 days.
Documents Required for EPO Application:
- Original passport.
- Copy of exit flight tickets.
- Any original documents related to your KITAS, such as:
- Work permit (IMTA).
- DPKK fund payment receipt.
It’s important to initiate this process well before your departure to avoid last-minute delays or complications.
If You Have Already Left Without an EPO:
If you left Indonesia without processing the EPO and want to return, you will need to apply for an Exit Re-entry Permit (ERP). To process the ERP, you will need to submit the following:
- A copy of your flight tickets.
- A copy of the exit stamp in your passport.
- All original KITAS-related documentation (e.g., IMTA, DPKK payment).
Can You Leave Without an EPO?
While you can technically leave Indonesia with a valid KITAS, it is mandatory to cancel your KITAS through the official EPO process to avoid issues when re-entering the country. If you skip this step, immigration authorities may ask for an explanation upon your return.
Requirements for the EPO Application:
If sponsored by a company:
- Request letter for KITAS cancellation (on company letterhead).
- Original passport.
- Original work permit (IMTA).
- Copy of DPKK payment.
- Any other documents as required.
If sponsored by a spouse:
- Request letter for KITAS cancellation.
- Original passport.
- ID card (KTP) of the Indonesian spouse (if applicable).
- Copy of marriage certificate.
