Investor Visa

Your Complete Guide to Securing Your KITAS Work Visa for Indonesia

If you’re aiming to work in Indonesia, one of Asia’s most dynamic economies, securing the KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas) work visa is an essential step. Whether you’re advancing your career or starting a new job in Indonesia, this visa permits long-term residence and employment, offering numerous benefits, including the ability to earn income, open a bank account, and access a wide range of services.

What is the Investor KITAS and Who is it For?

The Investor KITAS is a visa specifically designed for business investors in Indonesia. It allows investors to live and manage their business in the country, with minimal administrative hassle. Although the Investor KITAS has been in effect since 2011, it was the 2019 rebranding that introduced important updates, making this visa one of the most sought-after in the country.

The Investor KITAS offers numerous advantages for those looking to invest in Indonesia, particularly by eliminating the need for additional work permits and reducing overall costs.

Why Choose the Investor KITAS Over a Working KITAS?

Previously, investors were required to apply for both a Working KITAS and a work permit, which cost around $1,200 USD per year. However, with the 2019 changes, Investor KITAS holders no longer need to apply for a work permit, saving $100 per month or $1,200 per year.

This regulation change has made the Investor KITAS one of the most cost-effective options for investors looking to live and work in Indonesia.

How Much Can You Save with the Investor KITAS?

Choosing the Investor KITAS can lead to significant savings. For instance, by opting for the 2-year Investor KITAS, you could save $2,400 USD compared to a traditional work visa, thanks to the elimination of the DPKK Fund (a mandatory training fee for Indonesian workers) and reduced processing costs.

On average, our clients save approximately 40 Million IDR over the course of the 2-year Investor KITAS.

Who is Eligible for an Investor KITAS?

To be eligible for the Investor KITAS, certain conditions must be met:

  1. Your company’s authorized capital must exceed 10 billion IDR, with at least 25% of the capital paid up.
  2. If your company was established before 2009, a lower capital requirement may apply.
  3. Investors must own at least 1 billion IDR in shares in a PMA company and hold the position of Director or Commissioner.

If you are an investor without an official title in the company but own over 1.125 billion IDR in shares, you are still eligible for the Investor KITAS, but you are not permitted to work.

Can You Work on an Investor KITAS?
  • Directors holding an Investor KITAS are allowed to work, as stipulated by Manpower Regulation No. 10 Year 2018.
  • Commissioners are not permitted to work, but they can stay in Indonesia for up to 2 years. If a Commissioner also wants to work, they must hold shares worth 1.125 billion IDR or more.
Is the Investor KITAS Renewable?

Yes, the Investor KITAS is renewable, making it a flexible option for long-term residence in Indonesia.

Can You Obtain a KITAP (Permanent Resident Visa) for Investors?

Yes, after holding the Investor KITAS for a certain period, it’s possible to transition to a KITAP, which grants permanent residence in Indonesia.

Can a Company Apply for Multiple Investor KITAS?

Yes, a company can apply for multiple Investor KITAS for foreign investors, as long as their shares are clearly stated in the company’s Deed of Establishment and are valued at a minimum of 1 billion IDR.

Can the Investor KITAS Support Dependent Visas?

Yes, the Investor KITAS can support dependent visas, allowing your family members to live with you in Indonesia.

How to Apply for an Investor KITAS and How Long Does It Take?

The process of obtaining an Investor KITAS has become faster since the introduction of e-Visa in 2020, with no need for a Recommendation Letter from BKPM. The application can now be made online directly with the immigration authorities, and you should receive your e-Visa within a few days.

Once in Indonesia, you’ll need to convert your VITAS (Visa Tinggal Terbatas) into an Investor KITAS. This conversion process typically takes 10-14 working days, during which you’ll submit your passport for biometric registration and await the final approval.

Documents Required for Investor KITAS Application:

The following documents are needed for the Investor KITAS application:

  • Investor’s passport (valid for at least 18 months)
  • Company’s deed of establishment and amendments (if applicable)
  • Ratification from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (if applicable)
  • Tax Registration Number (NPWP) of the company
  • Business Domicile and Business License
  • Business Identification Number (NIB)
  • Indonesian Director’s ID Card (KTP) and Tax ID (NPWP)
  • Bank account statement with a minimum balance of USD 1,500

Note that the Investor KITAS duration is based on your passport’s validity—if your passport has at least 18 months left, you will be granted a 1-year Investor KITAS; if more than 30 months remain, you can obtain a 2-year KITAS.

How Much Does the Investor KITAS Cost?

The Investor KITAS has two options: a 1-year and 2-year visa. In Jakarta, the cost is approximately:

  • 15 Million IDR for the 1-year KITAS
  • 18 Million IDR for the 2-year KITAS

Most investors prefer the 2-year KITAS for better cost savings and extended security.
