Your Complete Guide to Securing Your KITAS Work Visa for Indonesia

If you’re aiming to work in Indonesia, one of Asia’s most dynamic economies, securing the KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas) work visa is an essential step. Whether you’re advancing your career or starting a new job in Indonesia, this visa permits long-term residence and employment, offering numerous benefits, including the ability to earn income, open a bank account, and access a wide range of services.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the essential steps and information to secure your KITAS work visa and start your professional journey in Indonesia.

Who Should Apply for a KITAS Work Visa?

The KITAS work visa is designed for foreign nationals who are employed in Indonesia for an extended period. It is available to those working for companies registered in Indonesia, including foreign-owned companies (PMA), representative offices, or Indonesian-owned businesses.

The duration of the KITAS varies based on your role:

  • Directors, commissioners, and senior managers typically qualify for a 12-month extendable visa.
  • Advisors and non-management roles are usually granted a 6-month, non-extendable visa.

If you haven’t yet set up your company in Indonesia, check out our Company Establishment page for information on how to get started.

Can I Apply for My KITAS Before Arriving in Indonesia?

Yes, you can apply for your KITAS work visa before arriving in Indonesia. Our team can help you obtain an e-Visa, which you will receive via email. However, you’ll still need to visit an Indonesian immigration office to complete your biometric process upon arrival to activate your work permit.

What Positions Qualify for a 12-Month KITAS?

Directors and commissioners are guaranteed the 12-month extendable KITAS. Management roles may also be eligible, although immigration rules can sometimes complicate this process. If you’re unsure whether your role qualifies, we can provide expert guidance.

For non-management positions, the KITAS is generally limited to 6 months and cannot be extended.

Do I Need to Visit the Indonesian Embassy to Get My KITAS?

No, since October 2020, Indonesia has introduced the e-Visa system, which means you no longer need to visit an embassy to collect your work visa. The visa will be sent to you electronically. However, you must visit the Indonesian immigration office for biometrics when you arrive in the country.

What is the DPKK Fund and Why Is It Important?

The DPKK Fund is a mandatory fee paid to Indonesia’s Ministry of Manpower to support the development of the local workforce. The fee is $100 USD per month, and for a 12-month visa, this totals $1,200 USD. This fund is non-negotiable and must be paid for the duration of your work visa.

Can I Change Employers and Keep My KITAS?

Unfortunately, your current KITAS is tied to your employer, and if you change jobs, you must apply for a new visa. You will need an Exit Permit Only (EPO) to terminate your current visa, after which you can begin the application process with your new employer.

Can I Hold Multiple Jobs on One KITAS?

Your KITAS is specific to the job title and location stated in your work permit. If you want to take on a second job, you will need to apply for a new KITAS reflecting that position.

What If I Don’t Want to Extend My KITAS?

If you decide not to extend your KITAS, you must apply for an Exit Permit Only (EPO) to officially terminate your work permit. Once your EPO is issued (which typically takes a few days), you must leave Indonesia within 7 days.

For more information on terminating or renewing your visa, check out our Visa Services page.

What Happens If I Overstay My KITAS?

Overstaying your visa in Indonesia can lead to fines, deportation, and being blacklisted from future entry into the country. The penalty for overstaying was increased in 2019 to 1,000,000 IDR per day, so it’s critical to ensure your visa is up to date.

Required Documents for KITAS Application

To apply for your KITAS work visa, you will need to submit several documents from both the applicant and the sponsoring company.

For the Applicant:

  • CV and degree certificate
  • Passport (valid for at least 18 months with 4 blank pages)
  • Photograph (4cm x 6cm, red background)
  • Domicile Letter (from your local authority or rental agreement)
  • Employment contract with your sponsoring company

For the Sponsoring Company:

  • Deed of establishment and amendments (if any)
  • Tax Registration Number (NPWP)
  • Business License and Company Registration
  • ID card (KTP) of the Indonesian Director
  • Company’s bank statement

Complete documentation is essential for the smooth processing of your application.
